Notre Dame fans were expecting to see an interesting quarterback battle this summer between last year's starter Everett Golson and rising junior Malik Zaire. It looks like Golson has removed himself from the conversation. ESPN's Brett McMurphy is reporting that Golson will transfer from Notre Dame and play his final year of college football elsewhere.

Golson graduates from Notre Dame this month, so he won't need to sit out a year before playing in his final season of eligibility. Notre Dame got off to a hot start in 2014 under Golson's leadership, but turnovers and inefficiency eventually led to Zaire getting the start in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. Golson finished the year with 3,445 yards passing, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. There's no word yet on potential transfer destinations.
