Report: Notre Dame Starting OL Matt Hegarty Will Play Elsewhere in 2015

Notre Dame offensive lineman Matt Hegarty, who started 11 of 13 games at center and guard last season, will transfer for his final collegiate season, according to ESPN.com. Hegarty is expected to graduate in May and will be eligible to play immediately at his new destination next season.

Hegarty is a pretty amazing story. He recovered from a stroke suffered in 2012 to become a valued contributor for the Fighting Irish. This year, it looks like the Notre Dame staff had its eye on replacing him with some younger talent, according to part of Hegarty's statement to ESPN.

"Recently my coaches informed me that they wanted me to change positions. They also explained that with many younger players in the wings, they wanted to develop them more heavily in the rotation-- a need that I understand and appreciate."

That's unfortunate for Hegarty, but part of life as a Division I athlete. Given his experience and ability, he will likely end up in a good situation next season anyway.
