Two Longtime WNBA Greats End Their Friendship Over Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark rookie season debates are causing friendships to end in the WNBA.
Two longtime WNBA greats have ended their friendship over the Clark drama. Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, is having an incredible season. But the former Iowa Hawkeyes star turned Indiana Fever point guard has faced criticism from some, especially WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes, who has a clear issue with Clark.
Another WNBA great, Nancy Lieberman, has defended Clark. She appeared on The Stephen A. Smith Show and admitted that the Clark drama has caused her friendship with Swoopes to end.
“I called her as a friend and I said ‘you can say whatever you want … but you do have to get the statistics right. I mean, facts matter … It’s ok to have a difference of opinions,” Lieberman said.
“She got upset with me on the phone and I was like, ‘Sheryl, I’m not doing anything to hurt you.’ … So our relationship pretty much is not happening at this point. I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, she didn’t want to talk to me. My life is going to be good or great with or without Sheryl Swoopes in my life. I’d rather have her in it.”
Swoopes, meanwhile, fired back on social media.
"Now here you go! I get what you trying to do wit ya boy @stephenasmith but it ain't working. You know good and well what happened. And ditto...my life is good without you too(and him). You wanna go there?" she wrote.
Clark, meanwhile, has stayed above the fray through all of the drama swirling around her. She and the Indiana Fever have been playing great basketball of late, rising above .500 with weeks to go in the 2024 season.
She's the obvious pick for WNBA Rookie of the Year.
