Red Sox pitcher David Price still has three years to go on the seven-year, $217 million deal he signed with the team back in 2016. The Red Sox are currently on the hook for three years and $96 million at a rate of about $32 million per year.

But it looks like Boston has little-to-no interest in paying the remainder of that exorbitant fee.

According to MLB.com, five teams have emerged as trade options for David Price. The San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were all named in the report.

Per the report, Boston remains approximately $17 million above the $208 million Competitive Balance Tax threshold. So the 34-year-old Price and his hefty contract are obvious choices to shed some of that fat and perhaps get a good return to boot.

But even that may be iffy given Price's recent form.

Price is coming off one of his least productive seasons as a pro. His 4.28 ERA and 1.314 WHIP were both the second-worst of his career.

Nevertheless, the five-time All-Star is only two years removed from a 16-7 season and the various injuries that hindered him in 2019 should be all gone come Opening Day.

It would be a high-risk, high-reward move for any prospective MLB team. We'll see who - if any - decides to pull the trigger on a trade.
