MLB Fans React To Phillies Manager Taking Shot At Ronald Acuna
Another MLB manager complained about a player having fun.
Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. broke a tie in Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies by blasting a two-run homer off Zack Wheeler in the fifth inning. As he rounded the bases, the MVP candidate celebrated his 37th long ball of the season by flapping his arms like wings.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson whined about Acuña's display after the 7-6 loss in extra innings.
"I like our guys to act like they’ve been there before," Thomson said.
Onlookers told Thomson to quit his belly-aching and make sure his pitcher keeps Acuña in the ballpark next time.
"Literally no one has been 37/65," an account representing Atlanta's mascot, Blooper, said. "Maybe that’s how you’re supposed to act when you get there. Only Ronald knows."
"I can stomach fans being salty about a celebration, but it’s amazing how often coaches talk about having a winning mentality and then turn around and say loser stuff like this to the media," a fan noted.
"What am I missing?" a fan asked. "The Phillies have almost half a dozen celebrations and rituals they perform after every hit. This was incredibly tame."
"The secret hack is if you get him out he doesn't do that," a fan advised.
Plenty of other fans noted that Thompson didn't seem to mind Rhys Hoskins spiking his bat after hitting a home run in last year's National League Division Series against Atlanta.
Only five players have touched them all more than Acuña this season. With an MLB-leading 65 stolen bases, he's three more long balls away from achieving the first-ever 40/60 season.
Tuesday's win also brought Atlanta one step closer to clinching the National League East and entering the playoffs with the game's best record. Those all sound like reasons to celebrate.
Acuña probably won't take Thomson's advice if hitting another home run in Wednesday night's series finale at Philadelphia.
