At the start of October, the baseball community lost former Red Sox star Tim Wakefield. The iconic knuckleball pitcher passed away at the age of 57.

Over the weekend, Wakefield's wife Stacy found an inspiring message that he wrote down before he passed away. She was kind enough to share those words on social media.

"Never forget  where you came from. Be a mentor to others," Wakefield wrote. "You didn't get to where you are today by yourself and no matter what status you accomplish in life, you should assume the responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than you.

"I've been involved with different charities my whole career and I can tell you that I've received much more than I've given. I've also learned that it doesn't matter how much money you've made, how big your house is or what kind of car you drive. What matters most is: did you make a difference in someone else's life?

We can say with absolute certainty that Wakefield made a difference in other people's lives.

Here are some of the heartfelt reactions to Wakefield's message:

"Tim Wakefield defined for me what it meant to be not just member of the Red Sox but the ultimate selfless person and teammate," one person said. "This short statement perfectly encapsulates exactly the human being he was. He is already so greatly missed."

Another person wrote, "A man who Boston is proud to claim as one of our legends. On and off the field."

"Tim’s just the best and I wish they would’ve retired his number while he was alive to experience it because he deserved it more than anyone," a third person commented.

Wakefield, a former All-Star and two-time World Series champion, had a career 4.41 ERA with a 200-180 record and 2,156 strikeouts.

The Wakefield family remains in our thoughts and prayers.
