What seemed to be a routine day off for Tampa Bay Rays star Wander Franco has turned into something much more.

The Rays said it was just a routine day off for their 22-year-old shortstop, but as Tampa Bay was in the process of dropping a 9-2 decision to the Cleveland Guardians, troubling accusations against Franco surfaced on social media.

"It was just a day off," Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters postgame. "I’m aware of the speculation. I’m not going to comment any further on that but the day off was because the day off."

It's important to note that nothing concrete has happened yet, but the noise was loud enough for the Rays to release a statement after the game.

“During today’s game, we were made aware of the social media posts that are circulating regarding Wander Franco," the statement reads. "We take the situation seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball as it conducts its due diligence."

Franco is in his third MLB season and last month participated in his first All-Star Game. He's been one of the top hitters in all of baseball over the last few weeks.
