On Thursday, the world's best golfers took to the course at Pebble Beach in California for the third major tournament of the year.

Tiger Woods took home the Masters to kick the year off, followed by Brooks Koepka's dominant run at the PGA Championship last month.

Both superstars had to wait their turn for a shot at the course on Thursday, which gave up plenty of strokes early.

Once they took the course, Koepka raced out to an early four-under par score after just the five seven holes.

Tiger, meanwhile, struggled throughout much of the round. He battled through a series of tough par putts and a few up-and-downs to take finish the day with a one-under par, 70.

With the score, Tiger sits just five shots out of the lead heading into the second round.

Despite the battle Woods had to go through to get to the one-under, he has to be happy with the result.

After struggling at the PGA Championship, Woods changed his approach to the U.S. Open.

It seems to have paid off thus far as Tiger sits just five shots back of a pack of leader at six-under par.
