We just witnessed the most entertaining head-to-head matchup in Home Run Derby history, and it happened in tonight’s semifinals. Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Joc Pederson combined for a performance for the ages.
Guerrero Jr., who broke the record for most home runs in a single round with a tally of 29 in the first round tonight, outlasted Pederson in triple-overtime in the semifinals, winning the matchup 40-39. It was a showing that any baseball fans who watch the Derby will never forget.
Guerrero Jr. and Pederson were knotted at 29 after regulation, and both hit eight home runs in their one-minute tiebreaker stanzas. Then came a best-of-three swing-off, with both players hitting one home run.
Finally, in the second best-of-three extra round, Vlad Jr. bested Joc 2-to-1 to advance to the finals.
