Earlier: Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera managed to get himself arrested on his day off yesterday. The 27-year-old is facing a domestic assault charge, according to reports.
Herrera was arrested at 8:33 p.m. ET at the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. on Monday, according to Atlantic City police. A 20-year-old woman identifying herself as Herrera's girlfriend had “visible signs of injury to her arms and neck” that were allegedly caused by Herrera, per NBC10.
The woman refused medical treatment. Herrera was arrested and given a summons for a future court date.
Herrera, a 2016 All-Star, is in his fifth season with the Phillies. He and the team had just returned to Philadelphia for an off-day following a long road trip.
The Phillies are slated to begin a home series with the St. Louis Cardinals tonight. We'll see if the team has any update on Herrera, who could face discipline from MLB.
Philadelphia could ultimately release Herrera, depending on how this situation plays out. Stay tuned.
Update: Herrera has been placed on administrative leave, the Phillies announced.
Herrera has appeared in 39 games this season for Philadelphia, which is 31-22 and sits atop the NL East.
