Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was shot Sunday night in his homeland, the Dominican Republic. Ortiz sustained internal damage and was rushed into surgery.
Doctors at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo removed Ortiz’s gallbladder and repaired damage to his liver and colon. He has been resting in serious but stable condition today.
This afternoon, the Red Sox held a press conference to address the situation involving their beloved former slugger. Fortunately, despite his injuries, Ortiz will be able to be transported to Boston for further treatment.
The Red Sox are flying him home on a team charter.
Ortiz's condition is still serious, but stable enough for the team to fly him back to Boston for medical care, according to Sam Kennedy.

Given the details of the wound he suffered and the harm it caused, Ortiz is lucky to be alive and recovering. This could have turned out much worse.
Also, kudos to the Red Sox for going the extra mile here to provide care and assistance for their former star.
Hopefully Big Papi continues to get better as he returns to the United States.
