Last year, the Cleveland Indians announced that they were going to have some serious discussions about changing their team name. A little over a year later, the franchise has officially adopted a new moniker.
“We are committed to making a positive impact in our community and embrace our responsibility to advance social justice and equality,” the team said in a statement last July. “Our organization fully recognizes our team name is among the most visible ways in which we connect with the community.”
So what will be Cleveland’s team name moving forward? On Friday morning, the club announced that it’ll be known as the Cleveland Guardians.
Cleveland announced the news in a video narrated by legendary actor Tom Hanks.
“We are loyal and proud and resilient,” Hanks said in the video. “We protect what we’ve earned and always defend it. Together we stand with all who understand what it means to be born and built from the Land.”

While there are plenty of Cleveland fans who are OK with the name ‘Guardians,’ a strong portion of MLB fans on Twitter were hoping that ‘Spiders’ would be the new team name.
Michael Lee of The Washington Post shared some really cool concept art for the ‘Cleveland Spiders’ on social media. Honestly, this may go down as a missed opportunity for the team.

All that being said, the actual logos for the Cleveland Guardians aren’t too shabby. In fact, it probably won’t take long for fans to purchase some team apparel once they’re available.
Cleveland fans, are you happy with the name change?
