We’re just past the half-way point of the 2019 MLB season and there have been some pretty amazing pitching performances. But Oliver Drake of the Tampa Bay Rays might have put all of the other pitchers in the league to shame with one throw against the Chicago White Sox last night.
In the eighth inning with Tampa Bay leading, 1-0, Chicago had a runner on second with two outs. Leury Garcia went to the plate and the count promptly went 0-2. But it was the third pitch from Drake that stunned everyone.
Drake threw a splitter that seemed to be going right down the middle, only to veer far outside the strike box at the last moment. Nevertheless, Garcia swung with all his might at the pitch, only to miss wildly, ending the inning.
The pitch was so incredible that ESPN even begged the question of whether it was even possible:
How is this even possible?

Unfortunately for the Rays, Drake’s stunning performance in the eighth was for naught.
Chicago equalized in the ninth inning on a James McCann home run off Emilio Pagán. An RBI single from Jose Abreu in the 11th delivered victory to the White Sox.
Nevertheless it was an incredible moment from Drake, and one that should have Rays fans glued to field the next time he takes the mound.
