When Did The Cubs Last Play In The World Series?

Here is a question for baseball fans, when did the Cubs last play in the World Series?

The Chicago Cubs have, without question, been amidst one of the longest droughts in professional sports history as they have not won the World Series since 1908. But when did the Cubs last play in the World Series at all? The team last played in the World Series in 1945.

The Cubs were actually repeat World Series champs in 1908 as they took home the crown in 1907 as well.

The 1908 World Series featured the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers, the same team Chicago beat for the title a year prior. The Cubs knocked off the then New York Giants in a one-game playoff to reach the World Series in 1908. The one-game playoff against the Giants is famous for "Merkle's Boner." Fred Merkle costs the Giants the game after not advancing to second base after a teammate hit a single. What should have been a game-winning hit led instead to a force out at second.

The Cubs topped the Tigers in five games to take home the 1908 World Series.

The 1945 World Series yet again featured the Cubs and the Tigers. That year wasn't as kind to Chicago, as Detroit took home the World Series in seven games.

The 1945 World Series is famous as the "Curse of the Billy Goat" originated prior to Game 4 between Detroit and Chicago.

Here is the Curse of the Billy Goat explained its creator, Chicago tavern owner Bill "Billy Goat" Sianis:

"The Cubs entered game four of the World Series leading the Detroit Tigers 2 games to 1, and needing to win only two of the next four games played at Wrigley Field. A local Greek, William "Billy Goat" Sianis, owner of the Billy Goat Tavern and a Cubs fan, bought two tickets to Game four.

Hoping to bring his team good luck he took his pet goat, Murphy, with him to the game. At the entrance to the park, the Andy Fran ushers stopped Billy Goat from entering saying that no animals are allowed in the park. Billy Goat, frustrated, appealed to the owner of the Cubs, P.K. Wrigley. Wrigley replied, "Let Billy in, but not the goat." Billy Goat asked, "Why not the goat?" Wrigley answered, "Because the goat stinks." According to legend, the goat and Billy were upset, so then Billy threw up his arms and exclaimed, "The Cubs ain't gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field." The Cubs were officially cursed."

So, that is the history behind the Cubs not reaching a World Series since the 1945 series and not claiming a World Series title since the year 1908.

Now you know the answer to the question of when did the Cubs last play in the World Series?
