It's been an up and down season for Ross Chastain. But this Sunday was one of the good ones as he came away with the win at Talladega Superspeedway.
Chastain claimed victory at the GEICO 500 today, giving him his second win in the last five races. He's now eighth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings and has six top 10 finishes this season.
Some would argue that Chastain got lucky with his win. On the final lap, several of his opponents inexplicably started spreading out, opening up a lane for him to go out in front and get the win.
But a win is a win and Chastain made the most of it. The Watermelon Man celebrated his win with his trademark watermelon smash in victory lane.
NASCAR fans absolutely loved it:
Speaking to reporters after his big win, Ross Chastain was surprised that he was able to capitalize on the mistakes here.
"Holy cow. I'm always the one going to the top too early making the mistake. With 8 to go, I was like no I'm not going up there. I'll just ride the bottom. I'm not going to lose the race for us," Chastain said.
It's a big turnaround from last week's 33rd-place finish at Bristol.
Chastain's first season with TrackHouse Racing is paying massive dividends to him. While he still has a ways to go to catch up to the lead, he's in line for his best season ever by far.
And we aren't even at the halfway mark of the season yet.
