On Tuesday night, viewers watching the Olympics in the United States were treated to the first events of the decathlon.
A 10-event series that pits arguably the best athletes in track and field against each other is always something to watch. Unfortunately, sometimes there are decathletes who aren’t as well versed in certain events.
That can lead to unfortunate outcomes like viewers saw on Tuesday night. Thomas Van der Plaetsen of Belgium stepped on the long jump runway with intentions of putting himself in medal contention.
However, the star Belgian decathlete did nothing to help his chances in the event. He actually may have suffered a significant injury in the process.
Van deer Paetsen sprinted down the runway and appeared to hyperextend his knee as he tried to make the jump. The movement catapulted him through the air and he landed face-first in the sand.
Here’s the jump.

It’s a brutal moment for the Belgian athlete who has worked his entire life for this moment. Hopefully he didn’t suffer a major injury and can still compete in the rest of the decathlon.
The long jump was just the second of 10 total events in the competition.
