Early Wednesday morning while most of the United States was still sleeping, the United States Women’s National Team faced off against Sweden in their first group stage game of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Unfortunately, fans did not wake up to good news. Sweden routed the U.S. Women’s National Team by a final score of 3-0 – and it could have been much worse.
It’s the second-straight loss to Sweden for the U.S. in the Olympics after Sweden eliminated the U.S. during the 2016 Olympics. Following the game, USWNT star Megan Rapinoe had a blunt reaction to the team’s loss.
“There’s no time to dwell and think about if Sweden is living in our heads or not,” she said. “We’ve got another game in three days.”
Here’s more via ESPN:
Rapinoe, who came on in the 64th minute with the score 2-0, added: “Did we expect this result tonight? No.
“It’s frustrating, and it’s frustrating that it’s Sweden. They found a lot of space on us. I don’t even know how many goals we have given up this whole year. I don’t remember the last time we gave up a goal. So to give up three is not great.”
It’s a tough loss for the United States, which needed to get off to a good start in group stage. The women’s national team has two tough games remaining against New Zealand and Australia.
If the USWNT wants to make it out of group stage, they may very well have to win both games.
Next up for the USWNT is a battle against New Zealand on Saturday.
