Olympic figure skater Denis Ten was killed in a botched robbery attempt earlier this week, the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan confirmed. Ten was just 25 years old.

Ten, a native of Kazakhstan, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by two unknown men trying to steal mirrors from his car, according to Russian news agency TASS. According to the report, the incident escalated quickly and Ten received numerous stab wounds.

He was rushed to the hospital where he passed away following surgery. International Olympics Committee President Thomas Bach released a statement following Ten's death.

"Denis Ten was a great athlete and a great ambassador for his sport. A warm personality and a charming man. Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age," he said.

Ten delivered Kazakhstan's first figure skating medal. During the 2014 Winter Olympics from Sochi, Ten took home the bronze medal in the men's single figure skating competition.

He suffered an ankle injury leading up to the 2018 Winter Olympics, but still competed. Ten managed to land in 27th place.
