This was supposed to be a legendary Olympics for 24-year-old Simone Biles. But the mounting pressure became an insurmountable obstacle when Team USA women’s gymnastics took on the Russian Olympic Committee in the team final on Tuesday.
Biles competed in just one event before she withdrew from the final. It had nothing to do with a physical injury, either. NBC reported Biles dealt with a “mental issue” during the prestigious event.
“We’ve just been told that, with regards to Simone withdrawing, it is not injury-related. It is a mental issue that Simone is having,” NBC reported on Tuesday.
Regardless of her mental health struggles, Biles stood by her teammates’ side throughout the entire competition. She had an awesome message for them after withdrawing from the gymnastics Olympics final.
“I’m sorry. I love you guys, but you’re gonna be just fine,” Biles said. “You guys have trained your whole entire life for this, it’s fine. I’ve been to an Olympics, I’ll be fine. This is your first — you go out there and kick a–, okay?”
Take a look.

Simone Biles deserves praise for having the courage to walk away when she felt something was off. She did it in the best interest of her teammates, as well.
Biles was shaky during the one event she competed in during Tuesday’s gymnastics team final. Her score hurt Team USA, and Biles recognized withdrawing would give her team a better chance at winning a medal compared to if she continued to compete. She was right.
Team USA took home silver, losing the gold to the Russian Olympic Committee. It was still a memorable effort from some of the world’s top gymnasts.
