On Tuesday afternoon the United State Women’s National Team made its 2019 World Cup debut against Thailand.
As one of the favorites to win this year’s World Cup, there was some pressure on the women’s national team to put on a dominant display against a vastly inferior opponent. Other favorites in the tournament seemed to struggle against underdogs early in the tournament, but the USWNT made sure that didn’t happen.
In fact, they put on one of the most-impressive performances in World Cup history.
After 90 minutes of play, the United States walked out with a 13-0 win. No, that’s not an error. The USWNT actually scored 13 goals in just one game.
Following the dominant win, everyone rushed to Twitter to make the same joke/observation.
The women’s team scored as many goals in one World Cup game as the men’s team has scored in the last four World Cups – not games, Cups.

The disparity between top talent like the United States and that of Thailand is greater than that which exists in the men’s game, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive.
Star striker Alex Morgan herself scored five goals en route to the 13-0 win.
Next up for the United States is a contest against Chile on Sunday.
