By seemingly all accounts, FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi were ready to sign on the dotted line to keep him in Camp Nou for the foreseeable future. But new details reveal that an outside force put an end to that at the last minute.
According to soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Messi was physically in the city of Barcelona this week, ready to sign the contract. Both sides – Messi and Barca – were ready to finalize the deal.
But at the last minute, Barcelona told Messi that they were blocked by La Liga from signing him. As a result, they cannot sign him now. Romano noted that this same issue has occurred with other Barcelona players too.
Messi reportedly appreciated Barcelona president Joan Laporta being up front and honest with him. But the end result is still Lionel Messi becoming a free transfer option for any team willing to pay his salary.
And according to Romano, Ligue 1 titan Paris Saint-Germain have already made contact with his representatives.

It’s an unfortunate situation that FC Barcelona found themselves in with Lionel Messi. The club has been battling serious financial woes that completely crippled their 2021 summer transfer window.
Barcelona are reportedly deeply in debt and have very few options for getting out of it in quickly. The club parted ways with president Josep Bartomeu in October due in part with his handling of the situation involving Messi.
But Barcelona’s loss is poised to be another big club’s considerable gain.
This past year Messi had 30 La Liga goals and 38 goals across all competitions. While he isn’t scoring goals in the high 40s and 50s, he’s still one of the elite scorers and will be a top candidate for the Ballon d’Or this year.
