After closing out regulation and extra time with a 2-2 deadlock against the Netherlands, the U.S. Women’s National Team claimed victory 4-2 in a thrilling penalty kick shootout.
With the win, the USWNT is heading to the tournament semifinal of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
U.S. soccer superstar Alex Morgan was clearly excited with this result after the match.
“Let’s gooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

Morgan has plenty to be excited about with the way her team closed out today.
After Rose Lavelle netted the first penalty of the shootout for the U.S., Morgan stepped up to the spot and confidently knocked in the second. With two incredible saves from goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and a third successful penalty from Christen Press, USWNT veteran Megan Rapinoe was able to cap off the game with a game-winning goal.
Despite an uncharacteristically shaky start for the USWNT, the Americans will take on their North American rival Canada in Monday’s semifinal matchup.
The winner of that contest will go on to face either Australia or Sweden. The loser will have one more chance to claim a spot on the podium in the bronze medal match.
Morgan is on the hunt for her second Olympic gold medal after helping claim her first with the USWNT at the London Olympics in 2012.
