F2 Driver Killed In Tragic Racing Crash At 22

Officials remove the car of Anthoine Hubert from the track.

A heartbreaking story unfolded during a Formula 2 race this weekend.

According to a statement released by the FIA, 22-year-old Anthoine Hubert passed away following a collision during the race.

Hubert attempted to make a turn when his vehicle collided with another racer. He was sent into the guardrail and hit by another vehicle. Track officials and medical personnel immediately rushed to the scene.

Here's a statement from the FIA regarding the incident:

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars #12, #19 and #20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

Hubert won the GP3 championship last season and had won twice on the circuit so far this season. The two other drivers involved in the accident walked away without serious injuries.

Officials cancelled the rest of the race following the accident.
