A Division 1 college basketball player has tragically passed away after a reported accidental drowning accident on Sunday.
Binghamton University announced this afternoon the passing of 19-year-old men’s basketball player Calistus Anyichie.
The rising sophomore is a Nigeria native and was entering his second season with the men’s basketball program.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, teammates, friends and our entire student-athlete body after this devastating news. Calistus was a kind soul. May he rest in peace,” the school announced.

Ithaca.com reported that a 19-year-old man was found in Upper Buttermilk State Park on Sunday night. The man has since been identified.
It has been confirmed that a 19 year old man found in Upper Buttermilk State Park last night has died after drowning in the gorge. Calistus Anyichie has been identified as the victim. Anyichie was a Binghamton University student set to enter his sophomore year, was a member of the men’s basketball team and was majoring in political science. More information will be published when it becomes available.
The rising sophomore played in 32 games and averaged 9.1 minutes a contest last season.
