Cam Newton appeared to hint at a quarterback decision on his Instagram page earlier on Sunday. That was before Mac Jones’ performance, though.
New England has yet to announce a starting quarterback for Week 1. The Patriots have said throughout the offseason that the job was Newton’s to lose. However, Jones’ performance in training camp and the preseason might be pushing Bill Belichick in another direction.
Jones went 10/14 for 156 yards and one touchdown against the Giants on Sunday night. Newton, meanwhile, went 2 for 5 for 10 yards and one interception.
While Newton will likely be the Week 1 starter, he might not hold the position for very long.

Mac Jones is done for the night. Final line: 10-for-14, 156 yards, one touchdown, 131.8 passer rating.

Mac Jones is just doing work, logging more & more positive reps to make this staff super comfortable if/or when they need to turn to the rook. He won’t be the W1 starter, but he’s made it clear the team is in good hands at a future date if they need him. A big training camp win.

I think the fact Mac Jones is working with a full second-team offense this week says Newton's the starter Week 1.
The fact Jones is still playing well with the 2nd team suggests it won't be for that long.

FOX Sports 1 personality Skip Bayless believes Bill Belichick will ultimately go with Jones.
“Belichick did start Cam in this evening’s final preseason game. But once again, Mac Jones is outplaying him, albeit vs backups. Gut feeling: Belichick prefers the guy he ‘stole’ in the draft, his new ‘Brady,'” Bayless tweeted.

The Patriots open the 2021 regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Dolphins.
Will we be seeing Newton or Jones under center when Week 1 begins?
