Joel Embiid gets caught checking a teammate's phone during Game 1 of the first round.

Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid faced major criticism on social media when ESPN's cameras showed him looking at a cellphone with teammate Amir Johnson late in his team's Game 1 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Sixers' head coach, Brett Brown, was not happy about it, either.

"It's completely unacceptable and we will deal with it internally, very soon. It's not something we are and certainly don't condone," he told reporters after the 111-102 loss.

Embiid has since addressed the incident.

The All-Star big man says that Johnson's daughter is sick and they were checking on an update.

“She’s extremely sick,” Embiid said.

ESPN's cameras showed Embiid and Johnson checking a phone late in the game. It was not a great look, considering how their team was playing at the time.

Now, though, we appear to know the full story, and it will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle this moving forward.

Game 2 of the Sixers-Nets series is set for Monday at 8 p.m. E.T.
