NBA free agency opened nearly two weeks ago and the biggest names have already signed with their new teams.
Perhaps the biggest free agent on the market was Kawhi Leonard. After the Klaw led the Toronto Raptors to an NBA title over the Golden State Warriors, three teams vied for his services.
The Los Angeles Clippers, Lakers and Raptors were all reportedly in the hunt.
However, Raptors front office guru Masai Ujiri reportedly questioned whether or not Kawhi was actually interested in returning to Toronto.
According to a report from Josh Lewenberg of TSN, Leonard’s camp made “unreasonable” requests during their meeting with the Raptors.
Here’s more from the report:
According to sources, Leonard and his camp – namely Uncle Dennis – asked for a lot from the Raptors in that meeting, things players don’t generally ask for in standard contract negotiations.
In some cases, they were asking for things that Ujiri – one of the most well-compensated executives in the league – wouldn’t have even had at his disposal. Their requests were “unreasonable”, a source said, which made the Raptors wonder whether Leonard was seriously considering them at all.
Leonard eventually took his talents to Los Angeles. He joined forces with Paul George – fresh off of a trade from Oklahoma City.
It seems he had his eyes on Southern California the whole time.
