College football is back this weekend. The sport will feature plenty of star power in 2018.

No matter what you enjoy watching, there are plenty of great players to choose from. There's impact defensive lineman (Houston's Ed Oliver, Ohio State's Nick Bosa and Michigan's Rashan Gary), dynamic running backs (Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor and Stanford's Bryce Love), big-time quarterbacks like Penn State's Trace McSorley and West Virginia's Will Grier and much, much more.

As part of his annual "Herbie Awards," ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit gave his opinion on which players will be joining that group of studs in 2018. Herbstreit named five breakout candidates for this fall.

Some of them you know already, like Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa. Others are guys you may not be familiar with yet but should learn about soon.

Here are Herbie's breakout stars:

  • Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
  • D'Andre Swift, Georgia
  • Tarik Black, Michigan
  • Dez Fitzpatrick, Louisville
  • D'Andre Walker, Georgia

You can read the rest of Herbstreit's season predictions and preseason awards here.

College football starts this Saturday, August 25. There are four games on the slate, starting with Duquesne-UMass at 5:30 p.m. ET.
