While congratulating Giannis Antetokounmpo on his NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks, Shaq appeared to take a veiled shot at his rival in the process.
“Congratulations @giannis_an34 thanks for bringing olde school bully basketball back,” Shaq wrote on Instagram. “It’s only one Superman now and that’s you. Dam you was dominating. Wow.”
In the comments of the post, one fan recognized that the all-time great big man had passed on his iconic “Superman” nickname.
Shaq appeared to throw another jab at Howard in a response.
“Yes I did,” Shaq wrote. “He earned it unlike some people.”

Despite both being freakishly athletic, larger-than-life No. 1 overall picks to the Orlando Magic, Shaq has never welcomed the Howard comparison. And when the young NBA star tried to take his Superman nickname, the OG wasn’t having it.
Donning Superman’s iconic red cape in the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest, Howard claimed the title with an unforgettable performance. At the next day’s All-Star game, the Eastern Conference starter was announced as Superman.
“Superman is still mine,” O’Neal said after the game. “He has to do something first to be called Superman. Anyone can win a slam-dunk contest. The real Superman is dead. He was assassinated by Pat Riley [in Miami].”
Shaq’s main argument throughout this years-long feud has always been Howard’s lack of an NBA Championship. But now that the NBA journeyman finally has his ring, the Big Diesel still isn’t ready to give him his credit.
Just last year after the Los Angeles Lakers claimed the NBA title, Shaq clowned Howard for celebrating the championship after offering limited contributions throughout the postseason.
Having engaged with O’Neal in the past, Howard very well could have a response to this most recent dig.
