Trade rumors have been swirling for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford this offseason. The Lions have come out and denied them, but that’s not stopping the speculation.
“Sources close to the Detroit Lions have confirmed to Local 4′s Bernie Smilovitz that trade talks concerning quarterback Matthew Stafford have been underway for a couple of weeks,” Click On Detroit reported on Thursday morning.
Lions GM Bob Quinn has reacted to the report. He says it is not true. “100% False!!” he told the Detroit Free Press.
Stafford would not be the first player to get traded after his team denied the rumors, though. It’s possible a move could be made this offseason. What teams might trade for him? Here are some possibilities.
1. New England Patriots
This would only happen if Tom Brady leaves in free agency, but the Patriots and the Lions already have a good working relationship, as Detroit is coached by former New England assistant Matt Patricia.
Los Angeles is in need of a new quarterback in the wake of Philip Rivers’ departure in free agency. The Chargers are set to move into a new stadium and could have interest in trading for a big-name quarterback ahead of the 2020 season.
The Colts’ quarterback situation is kind of up in the air right now. Indianapolis doesn’t seem to be that confident in Jacoby Brissett. The franchise could choose to draft a quarterback highly this spring, make a move in free agency, or spring for a trade.
Indianapolis has a good roster and could contend for the division with an upgrade at the quarterback position.
Where do you see Stafford playing in 2020?
