With the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft in the books, the Carolina Panthers still don't have a new quarterback option.

The franchise, which is currently set to enter the 2022 season with Sam Darnold as its starting quarterback, could take one of two paths toward a new signal caller: either select a rookie prospect in the later rounds of the draft, or go after a veteran quarterback option.

NBC Sports' Mike Florio believes the Panthers should pursue Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

"The Panthers should go get Mayfield, before other teams join the hunt," Florio writes. "With no second- or third-round picks, thanks to the ill-fated Sam Darnold trade, the Panthers aren’t in position to pick a quarterback tonight, unless they trade back into the round. Other teams that may want a quarterback are, and they’re likely to let it play out before exploring other options."

Mayfield has yet to find a new home since he requested a trade away from Cleveland earlier this offseason. While his stock as a reliable starting option isn't all that great at the moment, he's widely considered as an upgrade for a team that currently plans to roll out Sam Darnold in 2022.

Earlier today, Panthers insider Scott Fowler reported that the team is "unlikely" to go after Mayfield in a trade this offseason.
