NBA Insider Gives Major Update On Potential Jimmy Butler Trade

News broke yesterday that Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler wants to be traded. Butler reportedly requested a trade after a meeting with Timberwolves brass.

Complicating a potential Butler trade is that he is eligible for free agency in 2019. A team that wants to acquire him now has to weigh whether or not they want to gamble on him leaving after only one year to sign elsewhere.

According to reports, Butler has given three teams as preferred trade destinations: the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers and the New York Knicks. All three teams would have the cap space to sign him to a long-term extension next summer.

However, the market for Butler might be larger than originally though. Shams Charania of Stadium/The Athletic said this morning that other franchises could get involved.

"I think there's potential for this list to expand even more. The initial list I heard over the weekend was around five or six teams," Charania said.

There is precedent of a team sending a star to a franchise that wasn't thought to be a likely landing spot. During the summer, the San Antonio Spurs shipped Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors after plenty of noise that LA was where Leonard wanted to be.

Butler as a one-year rental might make sense for a contending team, which the Clippers, Nets and Knicks are not. There are another of intriguing possibilities out there.

Stay tuned. The Jimmy Butler trade rumors are just getting started.
