Charles Barkley has spoken about his relationship with Michael Jordan on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like anything has changed.
The legendary NBA big man revealed in an interview with Bob Costas that his relationship with Jordan continues to be strained.
“We’re not,” Barkley told Costas when asked if he and Jordan were still friends, via The Source. “And I take some responsibility for that. I criticized [him]–he was one of my best friends, and I definitely love him and miss him, to be honest with you, but I, Bob, I have to do my job. I said, at the time, and we can debate whether I should have said it, but I was asked a question, and I’m told always be honest at my job. I said, ‘I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets] because I don’t know if he got enough strong people around him.’”
Barkley had previously criticized Jordan for his job as an NBA front office executive.
“I love Michael, but he just has not done a good job,” Barkley said in 2012. “Even though he is one of my great friends, I can’t get on here and tell you he’s done a great job. He has not done a great job, plain and simple.”
“I think the biggest problem has been I don’t know if he has hired enough people around him who he will listen to,” Barkley said. “One thing about being famous is the people around you, you pay all their bills so they very rarely disagree with you because they want you to pick up the check. They want to fly around on your private jet so they never disagree with you. I don’t think Michael has hired enough people around him who will disagree.”
The NBA world is saddened to hear that the two legendary players – and Team USA teammates – are no longer friends.
“I’m sure its gotta be hard for media members with genuine friendships in the business. Have to be respectful of their friends while also maintaining integrity by telling the truth,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Others, though, side with Barkley.
“Sir Charles is right that the TRUTH hurts!! Gotta take the good with the bad Mike!!! Glad to see you reached out to Book because the call helped him immediately!!!” a Suns fan wrote.
Hopefully the two legendary NBA stars can mend the relationship soon.
