Frustrations boiled over in the Mets-Cardinals series after St. Louis third baseman Nolan Arenado felt a pitch was a bit too high and tight in the bottom of the eighth. Benches would clear leading to an on-field brawl that saw Mets All-Star Pete Alonso taken to the ground at one point.

The baseball world reacted to the sequence across social media Wednesday afternoon. "The meathead on the Cardinals that Greco-Roman wrestled Pete Alonso to the ground looks like he’s been waiting for this moment his entire life," one user pointed out.

"Pete Alonso minces no words regarding today's altercation," tweeted Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo. 'If I wanted to put somebody in the hospital, I easily could.' Says he was simply protecting his teammates when he was thrown to the ground."

"... who the hell was the person that completely manhandled Pete Alonso to the ground?" asked another user. "Talk about someone you want to have on your team."

"First base coach … Willie McGee!" commented Benjamin Hochman. "(Stubby Clapp was ejected. Video showed him throwing Pete Alonso to the ground during the Mets-Cards fracas)."

Hard to believe this will be end of things between the two National League powers.
