On Friday night, the University of Texas softball community came together in prayer after pitcher Miranda Elish was hospitalized following a freak play.
With a runner on first base, Alabama hitter Elissa Brown bunted a pitch right in front of Texas catcher Mary Iakopo – who attempted to make a play at second base.
As Iakopo went to make the throw, the umpire called the play dead after Brown stepped out of the batter’s box.
Iakopo must not have heard the umpire’s call and fired a throw to second base, but instead of making a play, the ball struck Elish in the head
The official Texas Softball Twitter account updated Elish’s condition throughout the night and revealed she’s “doing well.”
On Saturday, Texas head coach Mike White posted a photo of him sitting next to a smiling Elish – who appears to be in good spirits after the play.

It’s great to see her smiling despite the swollen lip.
While Elish is doing well, she won’t be competing in the team’s final game against Alabama. She’s been ruled out for the pivotal final game of the series with a berth to the World Series on the line.
Stay tuned for the latest.
