Clay Matthews grew up in California and played his college football at USC. The star NFL linebacker could be heading back there for the final years of his professional career.

The 32-year-old free agent linebacker has yet to sign with a new NFL team, though a potential landing spot has emerged.

Matthews is reportedly a top option for the Los Angeles Rams.

"[Defensive coordinator] Wade Phillips is a big fan of Clay Matthews and really always has been," NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said. "Clay Matthews lives in the L.A. area. A lot of people want to be on the west coast. The Rams have become a potential landing spot for some of these veterans to play however many more years they want to play and have a chance."

Matthews, a six-time Pro Bowler, and his wife, Casey, just gave birth to a new baby. The couple is reportedly waiting to make a free agency decision.

"I am told he does have 'significant interest,'" NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo added. "At this point in his career, does he want to play close to home in Californa? Does he want to go to a place that has a chance to win the Super Bowl? The answer to these questions is yes, and obviously, he wants some significant financial compensation as well."

The Rams are coming off a Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots.
