According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has tested positive for coronavirus. Payton is the first person associated with the NFL to test positive for the disease.

In the past week, seven NBA players, including Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell, have tested positive for the virus. At the moment, it's unclear how many players and coaches in the NFL have been tested.

Payton told Schefter that he came forward with his diagnosis so that people would "heed the warnings" the government has been issuing. Here's more, via ESPN:

Payton said he didn't feel well this past Sunday, took the test on Monday, and received the results Thursday afternoon. Payton is resting at home, fatigued, but said he is one of the 20 percent of the cases that has no fever and no cough. But now he will be quarantined in his home through the weekend, and he said he is upbeat and optimistic about a full recovery.

As noted, Payton's symptoms differ from what others have experienced.

Payton isseud a statement to ESPN as well:

"This is not just about social distancing," Payton told ESPN. "It's shutting down here for a week to two weeks. If people understand the curve, and understand the bump, we can easily work together as a country to reduce it. Take a minute to understand what the experts are saying. It's not complicated to do what they're asking of us. Just that type of small investment by every one of us will have a dramatic impact.

According to's Ian Rapoport, Payton attended a horse racing event on Saturday. It's unclear if that's where he picked up the virus.

Payton, who has been with the Saints since 2006, is 56 years old. Let's hope he makes a full recovery and leads New Orleans back on the field this fall.
