The National Football League has released a statement on the status of wide receiver Antonio Brown following his release from the New England Patriots.

Brown, who signed a one-year deal with the Patriots following his release by Oakland, was cut by New England on Friday afternoon.

The NFL released a statement on Brown's status on Friday night.

The league specifically addressed the possibility of Brown being placed on the exempt list.

“As long as Mr. Brown is a free agent, placement on the commissioner’s exempt list is not appropriate," the statement read. "If he is signed by a club, such placement may become appropriate at any time depending on the status of the investigation.”

Brown ended up playing just one game in New England, catching a touchdown pass in the Patriots' win over Miami last Sunday.

The star wide receiver will now attempt to find a new team, though that appears to be a tough task - at least right now.

Stay tuned for the latest on Brown.
