These 3 Surprising Teams Have Spoken With The Spurs About Kawhi Leonard

The San Antonio Spurs are still plotting their next move with Kawhi Leonard. They most likely have to trade their star, but have yet to find an offer to their liking.

The problem the Spurs are facing is that Leonard is a free agent next summer. It is no secret he wants to play in Los Angeles, so most franchises are expecting him to sign with the Clippers or Lakers in 2019. As a result, teams don't want to give up a haul for a one-year rental.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski details all of this in his latest piece on Leonard. Leonard's desire to play in LA is the reason contenders like the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers haven't been willing to part with some of their better assets.

Interestingly, Wojnarowski reports that some unexpected suitors have inquired about Leonard. They include the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards.

Trade talks with several teams continue, with traction slowly, surely gathering with offers for a star insisting that he wants to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. If the Spurs are losing deal leverage, they aren't operating in a manner that suggests they're peddling a depreciating asset. San Antonio has been determined in demanding a sizable return on Leonard.

Still, the bidding war among Boston, Philadelphia and the Lakers never materialized. The Los Angeles Clippers, Denver, Phoenix, Portland, Toronto and Washington are among teams who've talked with San Antonio, league sources said.

Toronto seems to make sense as a team that would take a gamble on a one-year dice roll with Leonard. However, Cris Carter, who is close with Leonard, says there is no way the 27-year-old forward suits up for the Raptors.

The Spurs are going to have to bite the bullet on Leonard at some point. They can wait until training camp before they deal him, but more than likely it is going to happen.

We'll see which team is there to capitalize when that time comes.
