Kyrie Irving is one of several NBA stars who could be a free agent next summer. Irving is able to opt out of his contract in 2019.

Speaking with reporters yesterday, Kyrie certainly made it clear he doesn't anticipate re-upping with the Boston Celtics anytime soon. He wants to test the free agent market.

“Contractually, financially, it just doesn't make any sense (to sign an extension with the Celtics)," Irving said, via the New York Daily News.

Kyrie will be coveted by many teams, but there is one in particular that might generate the most buzz: the New York Knicks.

The Celtics are reportedly afraid Kyrie will leave for New York, and an ESPN report last summer listed the Knicks as a potential preferred destination for the star point guard.

The Knicks are also in line to clear a ton of cap space for next summer, and there's no secret that Kyrie and Kristaps Porzingis admire each other.

Irving, who is from North Jersey, and Kristaps Porzingis exchanged glowing compliments of one another last season. Irving said he told Porzingis “I’d love to play with a big like you.” Porzingis told the Daily News that Irving is “one of my favorite players.

“I love his game," Porzingis said. "I think he's one of the most entertaining guys. And he's clutch. He's clutch and a winner. I love that about him."

The Knicks haven't been to the postseason since 2013, and they don't look like they are headed there next year either. They need to make a splash.

Would Irving be that big move?
