Over the weekend, a wild brawl involving several notable players broke out during a WNBA game.
In all, six players were ejected from the Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings game.
The fight started after the Mercury’s Brittney Griner and the Wings’ Kristine Anigwe got tangled up under the basket. No one wanted a piece of Griner, who threw some punches and chased Anigwe around the court before getting corralled by an official.
After the WNBA had a few days to think about the fight, the league decided on punishment for the players.
According to a release from the league, Griner received a three-game suspension while Anigwe and Kayla Thornton of the Wings both received two-game suspensions.
But that’s not all.
Here’s more from the WNBA:
As part of the same incident, Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi and Dallas forward Kaela Davis will be suspended one game plus a $500 fine for leaving the bench area during the altercation and directly engaging with the opposing team.
Additionally, Phoenix forward DeWanna Bonner was fined $500 for escalating the incident.
Despite received the ejection and suspension, Taurasi said she’d do it all again.
“Today I went on the court to make sure my teammate didn’t get jumped,” Taurasi told reporters, per Jeff Metcalfe of the Arizona Republic. “[Griner] got punched in the face, and then someone ran on her back and threw punches at her face. I would do that 100 times out of 100 times.”
Most of the players involved start their suspensions on Wednesday.
