If you haven’t seen it yet, the college basketball rant of the year took place last night after a Southern Illinois loss to Murray State. Salukis head coach Barry Hinson sounded off on his players after the game, and it was glorious — he called them mama’s boys, soft, questioned their heart, and said that he preaches “size doesn’t matter”, among other things. The postgame rant was great because Hinson wasn’t purely a rage machine, but instead brought some great humor to the podium.
Of course, video of the rant has gone viral, and Hinson regrets much of what he said. Today, he appeared on the Dan Patrick Show to explain what was going through his mind, and to apologize for a very uncharacteristic “tirade.” He was very open and honest, and once again, funny. His wife also appeared on the show with him, so of course Dan Patrick had to ask about the “size doesn’t matter” comment:
I absolutely loved the slip-up at the end when Hinson was joking with Patrick about Paul Pabst, one of the Danettes. Pabst is a graduate of SIU, but when Dan said that he couldn’t make the Salukis’ team because of his “C’s get degrees” attitude, Hinson chimed in “He could fit right in with some of the guys I have right now!” Of course it was a joke, but after the preceding discussion, the timing was pretty questionable.
