Video: Gregg Popovich Tearfully Recalls Promise He Made To Tim Duncan's Late Father

Earlier this week, San Antonio Spurs power forward Tim Duncan retired after a brilliant 19-year career. A surefire Hall of Famer, Duncan retired the same way he played the game: with dignity, but with little fanfare

Yesterday, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich held apress conference yesterday, during which he showed a rare display of emotion. Popovich got choked up when recalling the promise he made Duncan's late father William before he passed away in 2002, assuring him that he'd take care of his son and keep him on going on the path he'd started on.

Here's a transcript of what Popovich said:

I can still remember, before his father passed away, [him] looking at me in the eye and saying, “I’m going to hold you responsible to make sure that when he’s done, he’s the same person that he is now.”

In that respect he, is. He’s grown as a person as we all do through experiences but his inner core — he was over himself when he came in and after all these accolades and all the success, he’s still gotten over himself. Hasn’t changed a lick.

Well-said. By all accounts, the Duncan that fans and the public saw all these years was the genuine article.
