Longtime WWE superstar John Cena has not appeared in a WWE match since Wrestlemania 36 in March 2020. But as the wrestler-turned-actor continues working on his latest acting projects, is a return to sports entertainment still possible?

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cena confirmed that a return to WWE is in the works. He said that he doesn't know when that return might be, but that he will "definitely be back" with the company.

"I'll definitely be back to the WWE, I just don't know when," Cena said.

Back in May, Cena posted a cryptic Instagram message that was just an image of the WWE logo. But he clarified on The Tonight Show that it was just a case of him feeling nostalgic for his former employer.

"Some people took it as I was returning immediately, which that's not the case. I haven't had my last match and I can't wait to have my next match."

John Cena has appeared in over a dozen films over the past decade, but 2021 is poised to be one of his biggest years yet.

This year he's already co-starred in the critically acclaimed

Fast & Furious

film

F9

. Later this year he's going to be on the big screen for

The Suicide Squad

and

Vacation Friends

. Post-production is currently in the works for his role in the movie

SNAFU

.

WWE has kept churning along without Cena for a while now. But the company has always shown a fondness for bringing back wrestlers who have left on good terms.

We haven't seen the last of John Cena in a WWE ring.
