A few years ago, when Jim McElwain was at the school, Colorado State looked like it might emerge as a top Group of Five program. This season has been a serious downward turn for the Rams.
Former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo took over the program, and has three straight 7-6 seasons, with 5-3 Mountain West records.
He hadn’t been bad, but with the recent investment into the program, including the opening of a very impressive new stadium last season, fans hoped CSU would take a step forward.
Instead, Colorado State looks like it might be one of the worst teams in the MWC.
The Rams had a big win over rebuilding Arkansas a few weeks ago, 34-27. Everything else has been very bad.
Colorado State opened the season with a home loss to Hawaii, was blown out by rival Colorado, and since the Arkansas win, got crushed by Florida, and today, lost to FCS squad Illinois State.
The attendance at Canvas Stadium is a pretty strong indicator that the fans are not impressed at all with what has transpired with Colorado State football.
While some images show sections with decent numbers of fans, overall the attendance appeared to be incredibly sparse.

As the game wore on, Rams fans were quick to find better uses of their time.

Illinois State dominated the game, 35-19, so it is hard to really blame people.
Colorado State gets another struggling conference foe next week, in San Jose State. That might be pretty close to a must-win for Mike Bobo, or else he threatens to lose the entire fan base.
