Ohio, unlike our No. 1 ranked state, boasts not one, but two NFL teams. How did it turn out to be a college football state, then? Well, a lot of it has to do with winning. The Browns and Bengals, on the whole, have been rather unsuccessful franchises. Ohio State football, meanwhile, has been one of the dominant programs in the sport. The Buckeyes, who are the reigning national champions, have won eight titles, and are seemingly in the hunt every year. If the team doesn’t post double-digit victories, it’s considered a down season.
Ohio has eight FBS programs, including Cincinnati, but really, it’s on our list because of Ohio State. The Buckeyes have the country’s third-largest college football venue, Ohio Stadium, which holds just under 105,000 fans. Ohio is also one of the few states in which most fans root for the same program. And man, do those fans hate Michigan.
Every November, Ohio State students jump in a freezing cold lake on campus to prove how much they hate Michigan. They black out the letter “M” on campus to prove how much they hate Michigan. Heck, they don’t even call Michigan by its name – they prefer “That Team Up North.”
Ohio is a crazy college football state. But there’s one that might be slightly crazier.
