It's easy to forget at times just how dangerous a game baseball can be. Thursday night, we were issued a scary reminder.
Umpire Paul Emmel, who was behind the plate to call the Athletics vs. Angels contest, took a bat to the head with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Oakland's 5-4 victory. Angels pinch-hitter Jefry Marte accidentally let go of his bat on his swing on his follow-through. Emmel's head split open immediately, and when he removed his facemask, he was covered in blood.
Emmel was taken to the hospital and received stitches for his injuries. Here's video - warning - there's a lot of blood.
Let's hope Emmel returns to work as soon as possible.
