Is this why Kyrie Irving asked for a trade?
In July, Kyrie Irving met with the Cleveland Cavaliers and asked to be traded.
After over a month of trade rumors, Irving was finally traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and an unprotected draft pick.
However, many are still wondering why Kyrie wanted out in the first place.
Kevin Durant thinks he might have the answer. Durant was a guest on The Bill Simmons Podcast, and attempted to explain Kyrie’s thinking. Here’s what he had to say, per The Ringer.
When you’re around LeBron James, there’s so much that comes with that. Outside distractions and conversations and just noise that just comes around just from being around LeBron James. And Kyrie was at the point, like, “All right, we lost the championship, this whole season’s gonna be about if LeBron’s gonna leave or not. I’m ready for a new challenge.” All that stuff kind of met at the pinnacle of why he wanted to leave, and it just felt like he wanted a situation where he would just be free from all of that and just play.
If Durant is right, Kyrie certainly got what he wanted, and the Cavs got a solid haul in return. The Cavs and Celtics open the 2017-18 season against each other when the pair meet in Boston on October 17.
