The Golden State Warriors were afforded some much-needed time off after sweeping the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this week, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be enough to get two of the team’s stars back on the court. The team announced Thursday that both Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins will not be available to start the NBA Finals.
Durant, who strained his calf against the Houston Rockets, is not expected to be able to play at the beginning of the NBA Finals. The team is “hopeful” that he could return at some point later in the series.
Cousins, meanwhile, is recovering from a partially torn quad he suffered against the Los Angeles Clippers. He’s also expected to be able to return later in the series – but not the beginning.
Here’s Golden State’s official update:
“Warriors forward Kevin Durant (strained right calf) and center DeMarcus Cousins (torn left quadriceps muscle) were evaluated by the team’s medical staff earlier today.
Durant, who has not yet been cleared to begin on-court activities, continues to make good progress with his rehabilitation. At this point, it is unlikely that he will play at the beginning of the 2019 NBA Finals, but it’s hopeful that he could return at some point during the series.
Cousins also continues to make good progress with his rehabilitation and practiced with the team today for the first time since suffering the injury on April 16. It’s anticipated that he will play at some point during the 2019 NBA Finals, but the exact date is to be determined and depends on his progress.
The status for both players will be updated next Wednesday.”

Thus far, the Warriors have been just fine without both players. But they’ll need to be at full strength against either the Milwaukee Bucks or the Toronto Raptors to win it all. It’ll be interesting to see if either Durant or Cousins plays at all the rest of the year.
