After three years in retirement, Tim Duncan is back with the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant. His new boss Gregg Popovich had a quote about his coaching acumen that has quickly gone viral.
Popovich was recently asked by the media to expound on the decision to hire the Duncan despite his lack of coaching experience. In typical Popovich fashion, he had a pretty funny answer to the question:
“Tim Duncan doesn’t know a lick about coaching. I don’t even know why I hired him.”
The Spurs hired Duncan as an assistant coach in late-July, three years after the NBA legend retired from basketball. He entered the league one year after Gregg Popovich, and was a key part of all five of the Spurs NBA title teams.

The Spurs missed the playoffs in Popovich’s first year at the helm, finishing with the third-worst record in the league. But they won the 1997 NBA Draft lottery, and used the No. 1 pick to take Duncan from Wake Forest.
In his 20-year NBA career, Duncan never missed the playoffs and made 15 NBA All-Star selections on top of countless other accolades.
Whether he has coaching experience or not, Duncan knows his way around a basketball court. He’ll be a great source of knowledge for just about any young NBA player.
